Who Is Eligible to Apply?

Canadian Home Stays welcomes international students between Grade 5 and Grade 12 who are interested in attending a Canadian public school while living with a host family.

To be eligible for the programme, you must:

  • Be a non-Canadian citizen with a valid passport or identity document
  • Be entering elementary, junior high, or high school (not university)
  • Provide two years of academic transcripts showing consistent performance
  • Submit at least one recommendation letter from a teacher or principal
  • Be able to cover tuition and living fees
  • Apply for a Canadian study permit if your programme lasts more than 6 months
  • Note: Students applying to kindergarten, primary, or secondary school do not need a PAL (Provincial Attestation Letter) to apply for a Canadian study permit.
  • Important for minors: Students under the age of 17 must either travel with a parent/guardian or have a custodian in Canada. We can help coordinate this as part of the application process.

How it works

From application to arrival, here’s what to expect.

Step 1 - Check your eligibility

Make sure you meet the basic requirements:

  • You're applying to study in Grade 5 to 12 (elementary to high school)
  • You’re not a Canadian citizen
  • You have a valid passport
  • You can provide:
    • At least two years of academic transcripts showing strong grades
    • A letter of recommendation from a teacher or school principal
    • Financial proof to cover your tuition and living costs

Step 2 - Submit Your Application

Fill out the application form and send it along with your required documents to our email. If you’re under 17, we’ll also help arrange a custodian in Canada (as required by immigration).

Step 3 - Receive Your Letter of Acceptance

Once approved, you’ll receive an official Letter of Acceptance from your assigned Canadian school. This is one of the main documents you’ll need to apply for a study permit.

Step 4 - Apply for Your Study Permit

If your stay is longer than 6 months, you'll need to apply for a Canadian study permit. You'll need:

Step 5 - Get matched with a Host Family

We’ll carefully match you with a welcoming Canadian host family, based on your preferences and needs. You’ll receive details about your host, living arrangements, and community.

Step 6 - Travel to Canada & Get Settled

Once your visa is approved:

  • We'll arrange airport pickup
  • A teacher will meet you at the airport and fly both ways with you to ensure a smooth, stress-free journey
  • You'll attend a local orientation to help you settle in
  • You'll begin classes at your assigned public school

Students under 17 will require a legal custodian in Canada unless accompanied by a parent. We help coordinate and notarise custodianship documents where required.
